Offshore wind technology updates - Biographies

Peter Clive - Renewable Energy Consultant - SgurrEnergy

Peter has been associated with the wind power industry since taking his PhD in physics in 2002. He has had a central role in the development of the Galion Lidar, the 2nd generation wind Lidar system. This system enables wind fields to be surveyed with previously unobtainable detail and precision, revealing flow characteristics and structures that have a significant impact on the productivity and longevity of wind power assets. Peter also pioneered the introduction of response deficit analysis into wind turbine performance assessment, allowing the expertise and experience of wind analysts to be leveraged in the most focused and cost effective manner. His interests also include innovative resource assessment techniques that extract all the available information from the long and short term datasets from target and reference sites, minimizing project uncertainty and boosting project value. Peter has published widely on the subject of Lidar and wind turbine performance monitoring and has addressed many conferences around the world.

Holly Hughes - Senior Engineer - DNV

Ms. Hughes has ten years of engineering experience, primarily in wind energy technical consulting. She has conducted feasibility studies and economic analyses for numerous energy projects and technologies and managed international project teams, engineering system design, product development, and data analysis. Since joining DNV in 2005, she has conducted project development work and lead investor due diligence studies for wind projects. Now based in London, Ms. Hughes previously managed the wind resource and energy assessment team in Seattle providing preliminary and financeable wind resource and energy assessments for clients including utilities, developers, and financing institutions. During Ms. Hughes’ tenure in energy assessments, DNV performed approximately 160 energy assessments considering 14,800 MW installed. Ms. Hughes is a registered Professional Engineer and holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Graduate Certificate in Energy Analysis and Policy from University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Paul Jordan - Market Sector Director, Clean Energy and Power Generation - Ricardo UK Ltd

Paul joined Ricardo in April 2010, a leading provider of technology, product innovation, engineering solutions and strategic consulting to the world's automotive, transport and energy industries. In this new Market Sector role, he is helping the Company expand further into the low carbon technology, renewable energy and power generation sectors.

Previously Paul worked at Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), a leading wave energy technology developer, with primary focus on developing new business for the company across Europe. Prior to OPT, Paul worked in the Innovation Programme at the Carbon Trust, developing new low carbon technologies. His primary focus was to set-up and run the Marine Energy Challenge programme, to assess the growth potential of marine energy technologies, resulting in the influential report entitled “Future Marine Energy”. Prior to the Carbon Trust, Paul was at Rolls-Royce where he initially worked in Transmission and Distribution in the UK and then for Rolls-Royce International in Thailand carrying out business development activities. Paul then joined Rolls-Royce Power Ventures as Development Manager focusing on project development of 5MW to 150MW gas turbine and diesel engine power projects in the UK and Americas.

Paul graduated from Newcastle University in 1996 with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering (Europe), with Spanish as chosen language. In 2002 he completed an MBA at INSEAD, Paris and Singapore.

João Maciel - Project Director - WindFloat Project

João Maciel, is the Project Director of the WindFloat Project, a Board Member of WindPlus and he is the head of the Technology Development department of EDP Inovação and has more than 10 years of experience in working in the electric sector. He has experience in leading the implementation of new technology projects, such as several wave energy devices and offshore wind projects. He represents EDP in a number of international forums namely in the European Ocean Energy Association. He holds a Degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA.

Tim O’Sullivan - Operations Director, Renewables - J P Kenny

Tim O’Sullivan is the Operations Director for the Renewables division of J P Kenny, a Wood Group company. His background involves over 18 years in the subsea sector in engineering, project management and director roles. He has been responsible for taking the expansive subsea oil and gas experience and expertise within Wood Group Kenny and applying it to the wind, wave and tidal energy sectors. Tim has recently overseen the engineering and project management of; The Carbon Trust’s Wind Accelerator program for access, logistics and transportation; the Wave Hub development offshore Cornwall and various Round 3 offshore windfarm engineering studies.

Arve Sandve - Senior Adviser, Teamleader, Wind Energy Leader - Scandpower AS

Arve Sandve is an emergency response and health and safety specialist with more than 14 years experience from public and private sector. His experience includes risk management, emergency preparedness analysis and planning, training and exercises and HSE management. For Norway's energy company Statoil, Sandve has been involved in HSE and emergency response issues for offshore windprojects like Hywind Demo (the world's first full-scale floating windturbine) and Sheringham Shoal as well as various domestic onshore windfarms.

Dr Andy Saulter - Ocean Waves and Business Support Team Manager - Met Office

Dr Andy Saulter is an oceanographer with 18 years experience. His first job was working as a hydrographic surveyor in the offshore oil and gas industry. S, since when then he has worked in an academic coastal processes research group at the University of Plymouth, and as a verification scientist, wave modeller and marine consultant at the Met Office.

His work has included specific studies for the marine renewables indsutryindustry, including contributions to the UK Atlas of Marine Renewable Energy Resource and CIRIA "Guidelines for the use of metocean data through the life cycle of a marine renewable energy development (C666)".

Andy presently manages wave modelling and business support within the Met Office ocean forecasting research and development group. A, and as a regular surfer and sailor he is committed to understanding and improving the skill of marine weather predictions.

Iain Todd - Renewables Champion - Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group

Iain Todd is an engineer, who has worked in both the private sector and the Civil Service. He has held senior posts in the HSE, the Department of the Environment, and the DTI, mostly on energy-related issues.
