Power storage - the 'holy grail' - Biographies

Eur Ing John Baker - Head of New Energy Technologies, EA Technology Consulting

Eur Ing Baker holds the position of Head of New Energy Technologies, at EA Technology Consulting. He has wide ranging knowledge of energy storage systems and their applications. In the mid-1990s, he was instrumental in launching the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) Annex IX electrical energy storage work programme and, as an adjunct to this, served as Conference Chairman for the organisation and delivery of the inaugural EESAT Conference, in Chester, June 1998. Subsequently, he has led EA Technology’s activities on various storage assignments, including those for the DTI, ITI-Energy, MoD, Scottish Enterprise and financial institutions. He has an active and ongoing interest in the application of electrical energy storage systems in the power utility, electric vehicle and associated sectors.

Dr Graham Cooley - Chief Executive Officer, ITM

Graham joined ITM on 29 June 2009 as Chief Executive Officer.

Before joining Graham was CEO of Sensortec and Universal Sensors, founding CEO of Metalysis Ltd, a spin out of Cambridge University, and founding CEO of Antenova Ltd.

Graham spent 11 years in the power industry developing conductive polymers, fuel cells, batteries and energy storage technologies.

He was Business Development Manager for National Power Plc and International Power Plc and developed the Regenesys energy storage technology which was acquired by RWE from Innogy.

Graham specialises in turning intellectual property and technology into products; identifying the product strategy and business model required to enter a target market and generate growth.

He has a Degree in Physics, Phd in Materials Technology and an MBA.

Dr Gareth Harrison - Senior Lecturer, Institute for Energy Systems, School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh

Dr Gareth Harrison is a Senior Lecturer in Energy Systems in the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh. He holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Doctorate from the same institution and was appointed to staff in 2000.

As Deputy Head of Research Institute, he leads activity across a wide area including climate change impacts on electricity systems; renewable resource assessment, integration of renewable energy within electricity networks and carbon footprints of energy systems.

Dr Harrison is a Chartered Engineer, a member of both the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is an Affiliate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Stewart Reid - Network Services Manager, SSEPD

Stewart Reid is Network Services Manager for SSE's Power Distribution business, which owns the SHETL transmission system in the north of Scotland, and the distribution networks in the south of England and north of Scotland. Stewart has worked in the industry for a number of years in a broad number of areas including Network operations, asset replacement, policy and more recently R&D. Much of his current focus is on adapting the networks to meet the challenges of the Low Carbon Economy and regulatory change.

Jeremy Sainsbury - Natural Power

Jeremy is a director of the Natural Power and SeaRoc consultancies which total over 200 people dedicated to Renewable Energy based in 5 UK offices and 5 international , serving the onshore wind, offshore wind, wave, tidal, biomass and PV markets with full life cycle services and products. Jeremy has been in the renewable sector over 20 years with specialism in consenting and grid issues. He has led the NP team in over 2,000 MW of consents including 8 Section 36 consents and 2 offshore projects. Jeremy sits on the FREDS ministerial working group, RAB grid sub group, is SRF Vice Chair , SRF grid group co chair, AEP Scotland Committee and OWIG. He has been involved in major policy developments with planning, marine renewables, grid and small scale development for the past 10 years.

Steven Stocks - Director of Foresighting (Energy & Low Carbon Technologies), Scottish Enterprise

Steven has 20 years experience working in the Energy sector - initially working in R&D, and latterly, and more significantly in new product and market development.

Based in Aberdeen and previously Director of Technology & Markets at ITI Energy, Steven is now Director of Foresighting for the Energy and Low Carbon Technology sectors within Scottish Enterprise.

Steven has a BSc in Applied Chemistry and an MSc in Polymer Science & Technology from the University of Manchester. After developing an expert knowledge in high voltage insulation materials, Steven later went on to develop his career as a product and business development specialist within a number of European and US based high Power OEM’s.
