Post All-Energy 2010 technical tours - Friday 21 May

Our thanks to the hosts of our All-Energy 2010 Technical Tours, kindly arranged by AREG.

Here's what they encompassed.......

YES, there will be similar events in 2011. Please return to this page in the Spring of 2011 for more information.

Technical Tour One (2010) - Neptune Deeptech and Arbuthnott

Discover the manufacturing successes of two renewable energy businesses based in the south of Aberdeen City and Shire.

Neptune Deeptech is a medium to heavy engineering company with extensive experience in subsea and offshore engineering for the oil and gas industry. The company is also significantly involved in renewable energy systems projects, particularly wave and tidal stream and fuel cells. Major works have included Pelamis Wave Power’s ‘Pelamis’ system, Robert Gordon University’s ‘Sea Snail’ and Subsea Energy (Scotland) ‘Aquamedies’ project.

A comprehensive range of services is provided including design, structural analysis, drafting, fabrication, welding, machining, assembly, factory acceptance testing, systems integration testing, repair and refurbishment and field installation. Neptune Deeptech operates from extensive facilities at Stonehaven and Fordoun, near Aberdeen in Scotland, and has a manufacturing and support base for renewable energy project developments in Orkney, where it is anticipated that farms of various wave and tidal stream systems will be installed.

Arbuthnott Wood Pellets is situated in NE Scotland and specialises in manufacturing top quality wood pellets for the domestic and industrial markets under the brand name ‘Stovies’ ®.  Arbuthnott Wood Pellets was established in 2007 as the first wood pellet producer in Scotland. The company supplies only top quality pellets for the domestic and semi-industrial markets, using quality, locally sourced sustainable virgin timber with no additives.

The factory is located some 20 miles south of Aberdeen and is capable of producing pellets (brand name “Stovies”) at the rate of 2t/hour. Distribution, though more focused locally, covers much of the UK from the Shetland Isles to Devon. In 2008 Arbuthnott Wood Pellets was runner-up in the Northern Star Business Awards and was the winner in the “Best New Company” section of the Scottish Renewable Energy Awards. With widespread concerns about the security and cost of traditional fossil fuels, this carbon neutral source of energy can meet the rising demand for renewable fuel for local markets from local resources.

Technical Tour Two (2010) - Petrofac

Discover how the stringent survival training and emergency response planning for the oil and gas industry can be transferred to the renewable energy sector - Petrofac Training Services is one of seven business units that together form the Petrofac group. Their core aim is to develop competence and minimise risk for customers, wherever they are located.

With more than 30 years of expertise, Petrofac provides a range of competence-led training, managed solutions (training & competence) and emergency response and crisis management solutions, which are tailored both to their customers’ needs and to the challenges faced by today’s global energy industry. Petrofac’s RenewableUK (formerly BWEA) marine survival training course has been developed in response to industry needs and in line with OPITO standards, to provide understanding and awareness of the hazards encountered when working on wind turbines offshore.

Delegates will visit Petrofac’s Emergency Response Service Centre (ERSC) followed by a tour of Petrofac's Offshore Survival Training Centre. The ERSC, which is at a constant state of readiness, provides a complete emergency response solution for operators in the UKCS, and offers 24/7 emergency response support and a pool of specialist responders. The centre features robust and resilient state-of-the-art IT and telecommunications equipment. Located in close proximity to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and industry regulators, the ERSC is the first point of contact for a number of North Sea installations, providing them with an immediate and effective response in emergency situations. In its first year of operation the centre responded to 27 emergency calls and successfully handled six emergency situations, reinforcing the need to take steps to ensure that effective response arrangements are in place, so that any incident offshore or onshore can be managed as effectively and safely as possible.

Booking form: please complete all sections, including your mobile phone number which is required in case we need to contact you with late alterations etc.
